Milk Thistle is native to the Mediterranean area of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East and has been used for around 2000 years to protect the liver and cure diseases of the liver including liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, and gallbladder disorders. It is also believed to lower cholesterol levels, reduce the growth of cancer cells in breast cancer, cervical cancer and prostate cancer, and reduce insulin resistance in people with type 2 diabetes who also have liver cirrhosis.
A study showed that treating patients up to 48 hours after taking Death Cap mushrooms (Amanita Phalloids) with intravenous injection, with Silybin was found to be very effective in curing the poisoning, as the mushroom contains amatoxins and phallotoxins which can cause haemorrhagic necrosis of the liver and results in death.
Milk Thistle is believed to be a good hangover cure and is often taken before drinking alcohol to avoid hangovers.
The constituents of Milk Thistle are flavolignans ( composed mainly of Silybin with isosilybin, dihydrosilybin, silydianin, silychristin and in some varieties – Silandrin, silymonin, silyhermin and neosilyhermin), flavenoids (based on apigenin, kaempferol, luteolin) and triterpenes. 50G
