The Betel Nut is a stimulant and a fruit of the Areca; a tropical palm tree found growing in India.
It is one of the most popular psychoactive substances in the world and is used by around a tenth and a quarter of the world’s population.
Archaeologists have found evidence that it was one of the earliest known psychoactive substances to be used in the world as they found remains of the Areca at the Spirit Cave in Thailand, which were around 7500-9000 years old.
Betel Nuts may also have been used in India and Sanskrit texts from the 1st centaury AD said, “Betel possesses thirteen qualities to be found in the region of heaven”.
The nuts contain the stimulant arecoline, which is in the same cholinergic alkaloids group as muscarine, which is found in the Fly Agaric mushroom. Arecoline is also thought to cure intestinal parasites and improve learning and memory.
