Chracuna is a psychedelic shrub or small tree from the coffee family, Rubicaceae. The plant was often used by Shamans in Peru, Ecuador, and Columbia as an ingredient in the sacred Ayahuasca brew.
Ayahuasca translates as ‘vine of the soul” and the Tukano tribe believe that the vine is a snake that can take humans into the spirit world. It was often taken by shamans during rituals to see visions and to communicate with spirits in supernatural realms. The shaman would often believe that he had transformed himself into an animal spirit, which would enable him to enter other realms, and access information, which would be useful for the tribe. They would communicate with spirits to diagnose illness, prevent disasters and see the future.
The Chacruna leaves are inactive on their own but taking them with B. Caapi (an MAOI) allows them to become orally active.
The Brazilian Ayahuasca Church believes that B. Caapi provides force to the brew while Chacruna provides light.
The active chemicals found in Chacruna include the Tryptamine alkaloid, N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and beta-carbolines.
