B. Caapi is also known as Caapi or Yage and is one of the main ingredients of the sacred Ayahuasca brew. It is a jungle vine from the Malpighiaceae family and is native to the South American rainforest. It has been used by natives for thousands of years as a medicine and “plant teacher”.
Ayahuasca translates as ‘vine of the soul” and the Tukano tribe believe that the vine is a snake that can take humans into the spirit world. It was often taken by shamans during rituals to see visions and to communicate with spirits in supernatural realms. The shaman would often believe that he had transformed himself into an animal spirit, which would enable him to enter other realms, and access information, which would be useful for the tribe. They would communicate with spirits to diagnose illness, prevent disasters and see the future.
Ayahuasca typically involves two substances mixed together, one containing DMT and the other one and MAOI, which allows the DMT to become active (without an MAOI, the effects of DMT would be inactive). B. Caapi contains beta-carboline, harmala alkaloids and the MAOI’s harmaline, harmine (known as telepathine) and tetrahydroharmine. These MAOI’s Stimulate the central nervous system by inhibiting the metabolism of monoamine compounds such as serotonin and this allows the DMT to become active.
B. Caapi can be used on its own to give visuals and head rushes but is more commonly used in Ayahuasca to get strong hallucinations from DMT.
