Wild Dagga is a member of the Lamiaceae family and is native to South Africa where it has a history of use as an intoxicant. It was used by the Hottentot and Zulu tribes as a tobacco substitute and also to make a strong brew to cure the cold and heal snakebites. In China and Vietnam it was also used as a purgative and a euphoric.
The active compound in Wild Dagga, Leounurine, is found most concentrated in the flowers of the plant and is mildly psychoactive. The effects are said to be similar to Cannabis but slightly milder and have a slightly hypnotic feeling.
