Cohoba is a sacred substance found in the seeds of the Anadenanthera peregrina tree, which is native to South America and the Caribbean.
It was the most important substance used by the Taino people of South America and was used during magical and religious ceremonies to communicate with the principal God, Yocaju, the God of Fire. The Taino thought that it was possible to enter the supernatural realm after taking Cohoba. They claimed that they would see the world in a different way. Objects would appear upside down, colours would seem brighter and everything would seem the opposite way to the way that it seemed here.
Before it was taken, shamans fasted and purged themselves with vomiting spatulas made from wood and bone so that they could take the “pure food” of the spirits. These spatulas were often carved with figures of spirits from the other realm.
Shamans would mix the ground seeds with tobacco to make it stronger and sniff it from a flat surface or from snuffers carved from wood and bone.
The active ingredients in Cohoba are DMT (5-Methoxy-N ,N-dimethyltryptamine,
5-Methoxy-N-methyltryptamine,) and Bufotenine, an indole alkaloid which has psychedelic and hallucinogenic effects. The effects of Cohoba are said to be very similar to LSD but do not last as long.
