Sassafras is a genus of 3 species of trees in the Lauraceae family and is found in Eastern Asia and North America.
Sassafras has a long history of herbal use and was traditionally used by Native American Indian tribes as a tonic, antiseptic, aromatic, diuretic and stimulant. It has also been used as a scent in perfumes and soaps.
The drug comes from the root bark of the tree and has a euphoric, stimulating effect. When the bark is steam distilled, it produces Safrole, which is a precursor of MDMA. The standard procedure is to transform Safrole molecules into isafrole by isomerization. It is then oxidised to 3,4-methylenedioxyphenyl-2-propanone. It then involves another chemical reaction with methylamine to produce MDMA.
