The Fly Agaric is a psychoactive fungus and probably the oldest known psychedelic used by man. It is native to the Northern Hemisphere and it has been suggested that it has been used since the Stone Age by shamans for healing and to enter trance states. Shamans claimed that it could help them to locate lost objects, visit upper and lower worlds and to learn the language of the spirits.
Fly Agarics have been used all over the world and have a long history of use in Siberia. In Eastern Siberia the shamans would take the mushrooms and others would drink the urine as it still contained psychoactive compounds. The urine was often stronger than eating the mushrooms with less negative effects such as sweating. Users claimed that the smaller mushrooms were more potent and had a stimulant effect, while larger mushrooms had more hallucinogenic effects. They said that it was important to tell the mushroom what you want from it or it could lead you astray.
The Koryak of Siberia believed that Vahiginin, the god of existence, spat on the earth and this became the mushroom his saliva became the warts.
Fly Agaric was said to give users an amazing amount of energy for running long distances and carrying heavy loads. It was believed to be unlucky to consume an even number of mushrooms, so they always took an odd amount and never took them with alcohol.
In 1966 Gordon Wasson suggested that Amanita Muscaria was the Soma drink of the ancient Hindu, which was mentioned, in the ancient text of the Vedas. A song about Soma mentioned that the plant had no leaves, roots or branches, which suggested a mushroom and one line, mentioned men urinating Soma.
The mushrooms have appeared on Christmas cards around the world as a good luck symbol as it is said to be associated with Santa Claus. They are also found in fairy stories such as Alice in Wonderland.
The mushrooms contain the psychoactive chemicals, muscimol and ibotenic acid, which are, related to 2 major neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. The effects can be very unpredictable with users reporting feelings of euphoria, dream states, a strong sense of internal discussion, being able to think through personal issues and hallucinations.
