Griffonia is a woody shrub, which is native to West and Central Africa. The seeds of the plant contain 5-Hydroxtryptophan (5HTP), which helps the brain to produce the neurotransmitter, serotonin, which balances mood and promotes sleep.
Decreased serotonin levels can cause depression, insomnia, and eating disorders.
The effects of 5HTP may include a relaxed feeling, a good nights sleep and a feeling of well-being.
Traditional uses in Africa also include using the leaves to heal wounds and making a mixture from the stems and leaves to stop vomiting.
Today it has been used in the treatment of epilepsy and Parkinson’s. It is also thought to strengthen the immune system and reduce the risk of heart spasms. It is also thought to cure headaches and help symptoms of PMS.
