Wormwood is a plant from the Compositae family and is found in Europe and Siberia. It is known for its extreme bitter taste and is used to produce spirits and wines including Absinthe. It is said to affect the brain in the same way as THC.
Absinthe has been drunk since ancient times and the name Absinthium comes from ancient Greek meaning “unenjoyable”.
In Mexico, the festival of the Goddess of Salt was celebrated by a dance where women wore wormwood on their heads. It was also used as an old love charm.
The main active ingredient in Wormwood is a green blue oil, which contains thujone, thujyl alcohol, cadinene, phellandrene and pinene. It also contains absinthin and absinthic acid, along with tannin, resin, starch, nitrate of potash and other salts.
It is used in medicine as a tonic, stomachic (tones and improves functions of the stomach), antiseptic, febrifuge (reduces body temperature) and anthelmintic (a drug which expels parasitic worms from the body). It may also be used to stimulate the appetite.
