Graviola is a small tree, which is native to tropical areas of South America and has a long history of use in the Amazon.
All parts of the plant were used to cure illnesses including the bark, roots, fruit and seeds.
The seeds and the fruit were used to kill parasites in the intestines and teas were made from the root, bark and leaves to act as a sedative and for healthy glucose levels. It is also believed to promote a sense of well-being. Graviola applied to the skin has also been used as an insect repellent and to soothe muscle pain.
Graviola contains many active chemicals including Annonaceous Acetogenins, which are found in the stem, bark, leaves, fruit and seeds. Research groups have found that these compounds may have anti-tumorous, insecticidal, anti-microbial and anti-parasitic properties.
The Graviola fruit is believed to be a serotonin uptake inhibitor and an extract of the fruit was found to contain 3 compounds, which act like serotonin in the brain.
Graviola also contains more than 34 cytotoxic compounds (compounds which kill cells which are not functioning properly). This may make it effective in the treatment of cancer and in 20 tests since the 1970’s; it has been shown to kill malignant cells in 12 types of cancer. Research shows that these acetogenins are toxic to cancer cells and are attracted to enzymes, which are found in the walls of certain cancerous tumours. They then inhibit ATP, which gives these cells energy.
