Gotu Kola is also known as Indian Pennywort and is a small plant from the Mackinlayaceae of the Apiaceae family. It is native to Northern Australia, Iran, Indonesia, New Guinea and other parts of Asia.
It was traditionally used in Chinese and Ayurverdic (traditional Indian) medicine around 3000 years ago and was considered a spiritual herb.
There is a myth in China that Li Ching-Yun, the Tai Chi Chuan master lived until he was 256 because he used Chinese herbs including Gotu Kola, and in Sanskrit it is called Brahmi, which means “godlike”.
In Ayurverdic medicine, Gotu Kola, is said to balance the right and left sides of the brain and to develop the crown chakra.
Gotu Kola has also been used to treat a variety of mental illnesses including emotional disorders and depression. It is thought to improve brainpower by improving memory, concentration and intelligence. It may also improve physical strength and complexion in the body.
It has been used to treat cancer and tumours without creating toxins in the body and may also strengthen the immune system. In the USA, the most popular use of Gotu Kola is for varicose veins or cellulite.
Gotu Kola is used in some skin creams, shampoos, and conditioners as the main active ingredient, asiaticoside, stimulates skin repair and may strengthen skin, hair and nails.
